The headunit is pretty sweet!! I hooked it up is about a half hour. Got an extension cable for the USB and ran it with the Ipod cable. While I don't have an Ipod (yet), the USB is a pretty sweet source. I have a 16gb USB jump drive with almost 1 gb of mp3's on it so far. It plays them all, very nicely. Going through the sources, USB, Changer, Tuner, Aux., CD, was pretty easy. They all sound pretty good. Without the manual, I was able to set up the clock and the display features. For the poster who said that you could not display the clock, it is in the set up menu's. I have the calandar and clock always on. This radio replaced my 7, almost 8 year old Alpine CDA-7983.
Alpine is top notch in my book! Thank you for making such great products!!!

The Alpine CDA 9886 is a great head unit. It has lots of input and output functions giving you great flexibility. The iPod interface cable gives full control of the iPod at the tuner.
I installed this unit in my boat. The only thing I don't like is the fact that if the unit losses power the clock, calendar, base, treble, and subwoofer settings reset. In a boat, one often turns off the battery when it's not in use thus clearing the tuner settings. Thankfully the auxiliary input settings remain in place upon loss of power.
Great product.

After owning this Alpine system for a week, I can tell you that this Alpine Headunit Alpine CDA-9886 is way better than the SONY CDX-GT820IP for loudness, sound Clarity, Bass. I like the separate buttons to control the Bass and Treble as well.
I had returned the SONY due to lack of Bass and no BASS, Treble controls.
The bright light display is great for me, not sure why some don't like it. Love that bright screen.
If you just want FM radio then the SONY is better since you will get more FM stations at a better reception with the less static noise.
The Alpine FM Radio, is average compared to the SONY though on this.
For CD, IPOD, I recommend this one hands down and the BASS is really jamming on my new Infinity Reference 6022si (which I also purchase at Crutchfield) speakers.
My only negative is that it's kind hard to get the removable Faceplate onto the unit easily on the 1st attempt.

I've had quite a few Alpine HU's in my day. The last 4-5 years they were pretty much the same as any other low end head unit. The 9886 was a welcome surprise. Finally they put some quality back into it. You can actually turn the sound up and it doesn't flatten out the sound...It just gets louder.
The controls are very easy to use. The USB works perfect and the iPod controls are very easy to use.
XM is what I excepted, sound is kinda like FM. The sound quality just isn't there (not Alpine's fault by any means). But it works, and works well.
The two line display is very nice and easy to read.
The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is the stupid graphic on the side next to the title display, (the iPod, or USB or XM symbol) There's no need of it and it takes away from the text space. And the blue light for the buttons, VERY hard to read in the daylight and at night.
If the symbol display could be removed so the text lines could be longer, and the lighted buttons could change color it would be perfect.
All-in-all, this is a great head unit and I would recommend it to anyone. I'm very happy with it!

The CDA-9886 was the cure, for the static associated with my ipod being connected to an FM transmission device. The CDA-9886 works great with with the ipod and the display is visible in any light. This was a great upgrade from the factory radio. The CDA-9886 still has the ability to play CDs if necessary. Controls are easy to use and the connected ipod can be stored out of sight.
