The sound quality is great, but the CD loading time is slow and it reads 1 out of 5 of my MP3 discs. The description for this unit should read excellent CD player with limited MP3 capabilities. It will play MP3 discs one at a time but not on shuffle mode.

I purchased a Denon DCM-290 to upgrade a Kenwood CD Changer. The hookup was easy. I used coax. The sound quality is outstanding. I am using the digitial/analog conversion of the receiver (Onkyo 610) because that is the only way to have all the 5 surround sound speakers operational. To use the Denon converter, you must use the RCA plug analog connectors.
The remote is a bit cheap for a high end component. the buttons are small, and there in no power button on the remote. Since the front panel of the Denon does not have all the controls, the remote is really quite essential. This is definitely a drawback. I am now using the Onkyo remote to control the Denon. That control has larger buttons with clearer lettering.

I purchased this product (Denon DCM-290) at the end of 2006. It has performed very well. BUT, this only last about 6 weeks. All the sudden, the tray won't close, and makes huge noise. It is simply a MAJOR mechanical breakdown. This is too bad, because the Crutchfield 30-days return periods have just passed. Now, I need to have this repaired under warranty. This CD changer does not worth anywhere near $250. In retrospect, I'd say don't even bother.

I bought this CD Changer to compliment the Denon 2807 that I just got. It appears to be a top quality product and it works flawlessly. Performs in every way that one would expect from a Denon product and the match to the 2807 is perfect. I am very pleased with this unit and give it 2 big thumbs up. Highly recommended.

Cable choices |

I just wanted to point out to other potential buyers, is that if you use the optical/coaxial cable, you are thereby bypassing the cd players Digital to Analog processing abilities, and letting your receiving do it. That's fine, especially if your receiver is top notch. However if you are buying this cd player because of it's superior sound (compared to other units) don't use the digital cable, use a regular RCA cable. This will enable the cd player to do the DA conversion, and not the receiver. Just FYI.
