Description Features Crutchfield Hands-on Research Accessories

Garmin's StreetPilot c550 combines accurate navigation with a slew of essential features to give you a powerful traveling tool, whether you're driving crosstown or cross-country. You get top-notch map and voice guidance, plus the ability to make and receive hands-free phone calls with your compatible cell phone. In some areas, you can even get real-time updates on traffic conditions along your route. Plus, the c550's touchscreen controls let you spend less time programming it, and more time enjoying it.

Easy traveling
The c550 comes preloaded with the maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico that the system uses to calculate your route. As you're driving on your programmed route, the bright, 3.5" color screen shows you the map of the area and how close you are to your next move, while a selectable vehicle icon tracks your progress. In many areas, you'll be able to select from two viewing modes: traditional overhead, or a 3-D ground-level view.

To program your destination, simply enter a street address, intersection, or street name. Or you can choose from six million points of interest, including restaurants, tourist attractions, gas stations, and hotels.

Voice prompts delivered over the built-in speaker tell you whenever a turn is coming up. Text-to-speech technology even allows the c550 to announce specific street names, so you'll be able to find the right street without taking your eyes off the road to check the map.

The c550's powerful processors offer fast routing and route recalculation in the event of a missed turn, and help the system hold onto the satellite signal, even in areas of dense foliage or tall buildings and skyscrapers. You can also modify your route preferences, such as avoiding toll roads or ferries.

Bluetooth®
If you have a cell phone with Bluetooth wireless technology, you're going to love using it with the c550. You'll be able to make and receive hands-free phone calls using the c550's built-in microphone and speaker, which makes driving much safer. The screen will show you who's calling, and with a simple tap, you'll be able to begin talking.

You can also use the touchscreen controls to access your phone book and calls log. Need to make dinner reservations? You can even make calls to any of the c550's preloaded points of interest, as long as the phone number is listed in the database.

Real-time traffic info
The c550 features a built-in traffic-information receiver — subscribe to the service, and you'll be able to get real-time updates on traffic conditions along your route. You'll be notified of incidents such as accidents or construction well in advance, so you'll have time to alter your route. You get a free three-month subscription when you purchase the c550. Traffic information is available in select metropolitan areas only.*

Extra options
The built-in MP3 player lets you bring your favorite songs along on a Secure Digital™ (SD) card and play them as you travel. You also get an internal, rechargeable battery that lets you to use c550 outside the vehicle, too. A power adapter for the car is also included. You'll be able to mount the c550 in the car easily with the included suction-cup mount.

Garmin helps keep your c550 safe from theft, too. With Garmin Lock™, you can program a four-digit code, without which the system will not operate. You can also program it to work only after it's been taken to a designated location.

You can use your computer to upload customized points of interest. And you can expand your capabilities with optional software that gives you detailed travel guides, including restaurant reviews, or offers you money-saving virtual coupons that you can use for food, goods, and services at locations across the country.

GREAT GPS except for ONE Thing! June 19, 2008
Reviewer: kateyandsarahsdad from Alameda, CA
I didn't buy my c550 primarily for the Bloodtooth and as it turns out, that's the only reason why it didn't rate a FIVE; it is not compatible with my LG phone, and if it ever gets added to "the list", I'll be back to change it!

This is my very first GPS and I'm positive I made the right choice.  For all the comments, good and bad, that I've read about it, I find that it does everything well, is easy to operate and only comes up short on the Bluetooth issue mentioned above.  It connects almost as soon as I turn it on, it gives "accurate" directions, but when "the human" changes his mind, it is just as fast in recalculating and gets itself back on track.  And it knows THE street names, a definite plus from what I've read about what other comparable models lack. I can tell you with the c550, you'll be getting a feature-loaded GPS at a great price!

ok gps June 9, 2008

This is my second gps.  The reason i needed a second was my other could not find some address and you would have to out smart by adding zipcode or find cross street.  This unit finds almost all streets and i like finding near by stores before i enter city from my destination point. I did not like phone as your quality is less than ok sometimes you have to yell  the people on the other end find it hard to hear and understand you. I also wish this unit had a easy way to save locations you find along way with out entering all info each time. This is a good product but the extra features could be better. and does not play thru car radio like other gps. I am still playing with it but that is my experience so far.

Great GPS April 8, 2007
Reviewer: Chuck from New Haven, Connecticut
This is my second Garmin product. My first was the 2610, which I loved. I decided to upgrade to the 550C rather that update the maps in the 2610.

One thing that stands out in the 550C is the display. I tried a number of other units, and the 550C display is much brighter and much less apt to be faded out in the sunlight glare. I didn't think I would use the traffic feature, however after the free trial, I subscribed to it. It has helped me out in a jam many times.

The 550C is extremely simple to use right out of the box. It is extremely easy to find locations or addresses. We were in Pennsylvania looking for something to do and searched on wineries and we visied 7 or 8 in the afternoon. If you are in an area and looking for something to do, just search attractions and poof, you can find plenty to do in the area.

It so cool to have these moving maps with you. Ever feel like you want to explore somewhere but were afraid you'd never find your way back to the highway. You can go anywhere and always find you way back.

Ever on a long trip and looking for something to eat. This unit will help you find something fast then take you right back to where you were going.

The only minuses that I have found is that Garmin has made it so easy to use, they have left out a few of the customization features I liked in my 2610. The 550C has the ability to have only one way point in addition to the destination, and does not have the ability to avoid specific areas when routing. You cannot customize the screen like you can with the 2610.

All in all, I love my unit, it has really made driving run and a lot

Even better than I hoped for! September 6, 2006

What a great product!
The unit is so easy to use.
The text to speech feature is well worth the extra bucks & the bluetooth is perfect for the phone.

On one trip, both sides of the highway were closed & the system just recalculated in seconds & knew where to go!!

Combine all this with Crutchfield's service & support: best purchase I have made all year.
