While this unit has a lot of desirable features especially considering the price, I cannot give it a five star rating.
pros sounds great, useful features like aux-in on front panel, HD ready, pre out, great tuner sensitivity, adjustable input levels
cons manual is poorly translated from whatever language to english, has errors that waste a significant amount of time trying to access features, display is too bright even on dim setting and the multi-function volume knob is too sensitive and too short to grip by the edge without pushing it in and selecting a different function when all you want is to reduce the volume. my last complaint is, once i set the bass, treble and midrange to my taste the unit does not seem to remember the settings once turned off and back on, this may be a lack of reading far enough in the manual to discover how to "save" the setting but i am too frustrated with the manual right now to look into it.
in a nutshell a great buy if you don't mind a couple of inconveniences with controls and a poor owners manual

My girlfriend bought me this stereo for my birthday (after I picked it out on the Crutchfield website). I had heard good thing about this unit before it was purchased. First of all Doug was very helpful when I called to place the order. He verified that this unit would fit in my 2003 Tacoma no problem. I felt at ease after the order was placed as I waited for the unit to arrive.
Installation was even easy for me. Crutchfied had sent instructions for removal of my old stereo and a wiring diagram that was much easier to understand than the one included in the box from Kenwood. Start to finish took a couple of hours and this was the first stereo I ever installed.
I am very happy with the unit. It sounds and looks great. Set up and programming the pre-set stations was easy. The remote is nice to have too. I would definitely recommend this stereo to someone interested in buying a nice stereo for their vehicle. I would also recommend Crutchfield over any other company to buy electronics from. They blow everyone else away!!

I dropped the KDC-MP338 into my 2003 Saturn Ion due to failure of the stock unit. Also upgraded the four speakers to Alpine SPS-17C2. In short, a great upgrade over anything the stock system could offer. Excellent sound & power for the cost. Everything about the installation went smooth thanks to Crutchfield's step-by-step instructions. MP3 playback on CDs is nice to have as is the aux input on the front. The controls integration shared with the volume knob can get cumbersome but otherwise a very nice unit.

Excellent Receiver but with a small annoyance |

I bought this receiver after seeing it go down $10 in retail price but just before I bought it the "Outlet" version was even cheaper so I bought it. I am pushing the cheapest 6.5" front and rear in my car. These speakers are ok but little to no bass but I have the MTX RT12X2A with a Blaupunkt amp pushing them. So the bass is sufficient. The ability to change the rear pre-amp to sub mode is AWSOM. You can control the amount of bass in you music with a push and turn of a knob, this comes in very hand when going form Rap to Metal when there is a big difference in the "effect" that the bass has on the music. As an added bonus you can turn on or off the rear pre-amp just by holding a button. This is an awesome receiver to hook , in my case, my PSP and 4th gen. iPod. Both work as they should with the aux in.
The annoyance is when i reach to turn down the volume I sometimes push the volume knob in and there by turn only the sub down but not the overall volume.
This is an extremely option packed receiver with an awesome price. I think this is a "Best Buy Choice". You wont be disappointed in this product. Even if you are you can return it and get another. Just like my subs that I got that rattle....,ya I cant figure it out either.

Installed in a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Great power (infinity Kappa speakers and Basslink subwoofer), and easy to use. If you are getting this for AUX (which is what most people want), you can change it to just display the time, and then the display isn't as bright. And you can adjust the AUX volume..so it boosts the volume like 8 automatically when you plug in your mp3 player, which is nice because then you dont have to crank your mp3 player up. Crutchfield instruction were great, removing console, trim, and panels for the head unit and speakers were perfect. Very happy with the purchase
