Bought this after returning the BDP-IS1000 because the wireless rear surround was unacceptable. The reviews mentioned fast load times but did not expect only 5-6secs to power & eject and another 5 to read to play which is very quick. The BDP-IS1000 had a total load time of 51secs from power, eject and play. Picture quality is just as good as the PS3 but the MotionFlow will need to be disabled as my Sony W4100 display was quarky.
Parring this unit with the Sony HT-IS100 wired surround instead. The S-Air uses 2.4GHz which is outdated.

I have owned the Sony BDP-S550 for about 3 weeks now. Now that I have it set up properly, it is working perfectly. I am using it with my new Onkyo TX-SR606S receiver and the two work great together. I am using the HDMI cable to connect the blu-ray player with the receiver for video and sound. Unfortunately the blu-ray manual is confusing, and Sony tech support wasn't very helpful, but after browsing the various forums on the web, I found that I had to set the BD Audio setting to Direct in order to correctly pass TrueHD to my receiver. With this setting on mix, the blu-ray player decoded the TrueHD internally, and passed the audio to the Receiver as Multi-channel PCM over the HDMI cable. While it seemed to be okay, it wasn't great. When I did change this setting to Direct, the signal was sent directly to my receiver, which displayed that it was a TrueHD signal, and the difference in sound quality was night and day better to my ears. The startup time seems a bit faster as compared to older Blu-ray players, but I have not done a side by side test to verify this observation. Overall, I have had no unresolved issues, and I am very pleased!

Seriously consider the PS3 before buying your S550 |

The S550 is an excellent product indeed. I have lived with it for more than a week before deciding to exchange it for the PS3 bundle. I discovered after purchasing the S550 that Crutchfield also offered the PS3 bundle. In my opinion, the PS3 is a better value because it does everything that the S550 does plus more --- Wi-Fi connection, internet access, plus video games of course. Even though the PS3 bundle costs a little more than the S550 due to the extra cost in the additional game command, the wireless remote control and the HDMI cable that the bundle includes, one does get a high quality (lifetime-guaranteed) Monster HDMI 24K gold-plated cable. My recommendation is that you should seriously consider the PS3 first before deciding on the S550 so that you do not repeat what I did - exchanging the S550 for the PS3. I am glad that I purchased mine from Crutchfield and I could reverse my mistake. And again, the S550 is indeed an excellent product if you do not really care for video games and internet browsing using your HDTV.

Sony BDP S550 |

Our first Crutchfield Sony Blu-Ray DVD player was a BDP S350 for our Sony XBR6 32" TV in our living room. That picture was SO great, that for MY set, I opted for a "Bigger and Better" Blu-Ray player! This player works wonders on any Blu-Ray discs--period. I'm sure that there are more costly players out there, but for the actual money, NOTHING will beat this component. Unfortunately, my Samsung DLP HDTV is unable to take advantage of the out-of-the-world specs of the S550--I don't have 120 Hz refresh or 24 frame capability--which the S550 will AUTOMATICALLY switch to! Add Crutchfield's superb service and technical help, and this selection becomes a total "no-brainer!" Treat yourself to a component that will easily outperform ANY HDTV made right now!
