Fantastic system all around. The sound quality is amazing and the surround system is WOW. I have HDMI connections from my TV to the Sony system and the picture and sound is better than crystal clear. Don't skimp on the HDMI cables either, $50 should get you a great cable, it's worth the experience.

I owned a Sony Bravia XBR tv and looked for a sound system that complimented the tv - both in looks and sound. The system was easy to install through the assistance of a Crutchfield representative. After installing the system I did purchase a wireless unit for the surround speakers. That provided a richer quality of sound without running wires around the room. The remote with the tv is compatable with the sound system and vice versa. It is still necessary to use the remote with my hd-cable-dvr to control the cable guide - something I wish Sony could address, though I'm not certain they can because of the proprietary nature of the dvr boxes. The one criticism of the sound system (and one I knew before purchase) is the lack of control over the sub-woofer. I would prefer to tone it down a bit. All in all I am very pleased with the system and would recommend it to someone looking for a relatively inexpensive system in a box.

I was looking for a solid performing, inexpensive home theater system. After much deliberation, I finally settled on this unit. 30-45 minutes of setup was required to get everything up and running (small screwdriver is required). As stated in other sections, this unit is limited by its input/output capabilities, but that seems to be the status quo for these types of devices. With a bit of creativity though, I was able to hook up my directv hd-dvr, my sonos sound system, and an extra a/v component into the hdx500 and the hdtv.
As far as performance is concerned, the unit sounds great for a sub-500 dollar surround system. It doesn't have bass/treble/equalizer controls from what I've found, but the sound is well balanced (without sony enhanced bass on and with the attenuation off -- both defaulted on at setup). DVD playback has been a pleasant surprise. I'm using the component cables to run to my television (hdmi input on tv is utilized by directv), but dvd's have never looked so clean and clear. I'm curious about the upconversion through hdmi, but I have yet to try it out. I'm not entirely sure how the picture can look much better. Other than the standard lack of inputs/outputs found on this system (known before purchase), its been better than anticipated. I'd recommend this system to anyone looking to spend under a grand on an all-in-one home theater.
