Despite many attempts at troubleshooting the problem, I never was able to get a picture on my new Samsung HDTV using an HDMI cable between the TV and the DVD player. I had to use component or S-video, which defeated the purpose of buying this model. After about a month of experimenting with different fixes, the player stopped recognizing and playing discs altogether. It's under warranty, and Sony offers to repair it or replace it with a "refurbished" model, presumably someone else's repaired unit. I must pay shipping to Texas. I'm awaiting results and will see if the replacement functions properly. On another point, one design aspect that could be improved is the socket where the HDMI cable is plugged into the DVD player. It's quite shallow and allows the cable plug to move around within the socket whenever the cable is moved even slightly. I tried two cables just to make sure it wasn't the cable design. I don't know if this is related to the defect discussed above, but any such movement might be enough to bend the connectors in the socket or on the plug. Sony advises to be careful about moving the cable for this reason, but in my view if you're going to go anywhere near any of the cables or move the player even slightly, you first should carefully unplug the HDMI cable to ensure it's not damaged inadvertently.
