Preliminary Findings - Works for my Basic Needs October 17, 2008
Reviewer: Scott from Sturbridge, MA
I'm certainly no techy, and I really don't have much with which to compare, but it's working fine for me and for what I ask of it...which is very little.  Play the CD, tuner, and television audio to my outdoor speakers with enough power to clearly hear, without overpowering the discussions occuring outside.  I had to spend a good chunk of change on the speakers, so I needed to keep the receiver cost low.  I couldn't beleive the cheapest one was a Sony.  I'm in the television business, and we love Sony.  It's still probably too early for me to truly rate this product (2-3 weeks ownership), but it does exactly what I expected it to...the basics - easy operation with good sound.  I don't know if this is normal, or if I might've done something wrong in hook-up, but I'm surprised that the volume level of "40" on the receiver seems to be the ideal level.  That seems high to me.  When I first hooked it up, I turned up the volume to "15" to "20" on the volume display, and it was so low that I thought I did something wrong.  After playing around with it, it just seems those are the number ratings they assigned.

Just what we needed! October 6, 2008

Great unit for the money.  We needed a receiver for background music.  This unit works great.  The bass boost on this unit really helps.  It adds fullness to the music and keeps the music from sounding thin at low volumes.  Expect years of service from this Sony unit.

Evolution 135 , 185, 197 November 13, 2007
Reviewer: Larry from Washington State
I have owned the evolution of Sony stereo recievers from 135, 185 and now the 197. Except for the the drop of the Phono amp they remain the same. ; And that is a plus. To the one bad reviewer in 9 , I would would reply: You either recieved a defective lemon , or you should get a hearing test. I have been a Harman Kardon Fan for 40 years, and my recent "baby" is the HK-3485. But I must admit, using the  Pioneer recievers mentioned above as auxilary Recievers for my Garage , my College kids, and the cCabin, these recievers remain very good . They have an FM RF section only a couple of eye blinks behind my Harman Kardon's. By the way I am a retired Physicist and Avionics tech., and I appreciate the discrete output circuitry of the 197. Man, they test out just fine through my Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones and JBL towers. Not a harsh sound anywhere. This is a true bargain amp. Enjoy, as I have.

Sony STR-DE197 Reciever November 11, 2007
Reviewer: Jeff from Vance, AL
I sent this back to Crutchfield - and I bought on Onkyo receiver. I told Crutchfield they should dicontinue this in their product line up.

Basically - the receiver is a toy. You have to wire it up with such thin wire - and the sound is just awful. It has so much "hum" in the sound - the hum is louder that your speakers when you turn up the treble about 60 percent.

Do yourself a favor - buy the Onkyo, or any receiver besides this.

Well - Crutchfield always makes it right. I am not an employee of Crutchfied - but - I think they are the best company in America.

For $40 more - you can buy the Onkyo and it sounds great - I bought two I was so impressed by the Onkyo. The Sony STR-DE197 - I can't imagine anybody being satified with this piece.

I guess if you are thinking about buying this - just don't.

Thanks - Jeff N.
